NEBRASKA RIGHT TO LIFE PAC GIVES SOLE ENDORSEMENT IN GENERAL ELECTION TO SENATOR BEN NELSON

Lincoln---The Nebraska Right to Life Political Action Committee (NRL PAC) today gave a sole endorsement to Senator Ben Nelson for the General Election. Senator Nelson was endorsed in the Democratic Primary as were the three Senate candidates in the Republican Primary.

“During the Primary season all Republican candidates for Senate were told that their endorsements were good only for the Primary and that after the Primary the Board would consider it’s policy of giving a sole endorsement to the incumbent in that seat.” said Denise Ashby, NRL PAC Director. “Given Senator Nelson’s pro-life voting record our Board felt it important to engage the sole endorsement policy for the incumbent.”

Senator Nelson voted for confirmation of Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito as well as voting against the McCain-Feingold Act in addition to other pro-life votes and actions taken while Governor and Senator.

“We appreciate Senator Nelson’s commitment to pro-life principles.” said Ashby. Nebraska Right to Life is the State Affiliate to the National Right to Life Committee in Washington, D.C.

TIMELINE OF HOW NEBRASKA RIGHT TO LIFE PAC HAS BEEN CONSISTENT IN ITS SOLE ENDORSEMENT TO THE PRO-LIFE INCUMBENT POLICY WITH REGARD TO BEN NELSON

1990

Ben Nelson challenges incumbent pro-life Governor Kay Orr; in the General Election he is not endorsed because NRL PAC abides by its policy of giving a sole endorsement to the pro-life incumbent. Nelson wins.

1994

Ben Nelson endorsed for Governor in Primary & General.

Ralph Knoebel endorsed for Governor in GOP Primary.

Nelson received sole endorsement in General as incumbent. Gene Spence, the Republican, ran in General but was not endorsed in GOP Primary as did not fill out our survey and said he was "pro-choice". Nelson wins.

1996

Ben Nelson endorsed in open Democratic Senate Primary.

Don Stenberg endorsed in open GOP Senate Primary.

Chuck Hagel also ran, not endorsed in Primary as unknown and Ben and Don had records. In General elevated Hagel to endorsement with Nelson over Nelson appointing Karen Flowers to a county judgeship; Flowers had a record of supporting PP. Hagel wins.

2000

Ben Nelson endorsed for Primary and General in open Senate race.(no incumbent.) Don Stenberg and Dave Hergert endorsed in open GOP Primary. Stenberg endorsed in General as winner of GOP Primary. Nelson wins.

2006

Ben Nelson has six years of voting pro-life under his belt as pro-life incumbent in Senate and therefore the old issues of appointing pro-abortion Judge; etc. did not weigh in. Pete Ricketts, Don Stenberg and Dave Kramer are all endorsed in GOP Primary only and were told in meeting in March, 2006 that the endorsement was good for only the Primary and after that, NRL PAC would most likely re-visit its policy of giving a sole endorsement to the incumbent in the race, Ben Nelson. In General, sole endorsement given to Nelson.

Some in GOP circles are complaining that NRL PAC policy is not fair and that ALL pro-life candidates should be endorsed at ALL times. Curiously they don’t complain when the NRL PAC sole endorsement goes to a Republican incumbent. Then they are strangely silent. As can be seen from the above record; NRL PAC is consistent in its approach of invoking its sole endorsement for the incumbent policy; whether they are Republican or Democrat

SENATOR NELSON'S RECORD

THE FOLLOWING IS A COMPILATION FROM SENATOR NELSON'S CAMPAIGN OF HIS RECORD AS GOVERNOR AND SENATOR. ADD THE TIMES HE DIVERTED FROM NRL POSITION ON MEXICO CITY POLICY, OVERSEAS POPULATION FUNDING AND YOU CAN SEE THIS IS AN EXTENSIVE SUMMATION OF HIS RECORD.  NRL PAC DOES NOT REQUIRE A 100% RATING IN ORDER TO GIVE A SOLE ENDORSEMENT TO THE INCUMBENT WHICH IS WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION.

BEN NELSON: A PRO LIFE SENATOR

Ben Nelson is Pro Life and strongly supports the right to life.  From his
first day in public life, he has worked to reduce the number of abortions.
As Governor and as Senator, Nelson was a strong supporter of the partial
birth abortion ban.  He will continue to work to prevent taxpayer funding of
abortions and supports stronger restrictions on abortion.

Nelson Opposed Reaffirming Roe v. Wade and a Woman's Right to an Abortion.

his political careers." [Vote #48, 3/12/2003, amendment passed 52-46,

federal funds for research on umbilical cord, placenta, adult and animal
stem cells, which do not involve the same moral dilemma, but also hold great
