America at The Crossroads

As the plane approached Reagan National Airport the excitement began to rise. Within minutes the four of us would be at the United States Supreme Court. We put our luggage in a locker at the airport and got on the subway for the ride into Washington, DC. As we came out of the Capitol South station there was a mist falling from the sky. We walked to the Supreme Court and my emotions were all bottled up inside. The cellular phone started ringing with reporters wanting our view on the decision. It was almost 10:30 when we reached the steps of the Supreme Court. The decision on Carhart v. Stenberg came down 30 minutes earlier. Lt. Governor Maurstad filled us in on what had happened. What a blow that the whole law was struck down. You can prepare yourself for the worst but it still hits hard. By this time Nebraska abortionist Carhart was holding a press conference. The sky opened up and started raining. I know it was tears from heaven.

Nebraska Board Member to the National Flight to Life Board of Directors
By noon I was at the National Right to Life Committee Board of Directors Meeting. The mood of the meeting was as gloomy as the weather had been outside the Supreme Court. Everyone was letting me know how sorry they were that the case went the way it did and what they felt about it, When asked my opinion, I would say "it was a wake up call for America." As the meeting progressed through the afternoon something amazing started to happen. No more sorrow for the decision handed down to us, but a feeling of strength and unity. We may have lost this round, but the war was far from over. Nebraska kicked the door open and now the rest of the country must charge through it. One lady told me at the Congressional Reception, "God will have to make abortion so hideous in the minds of most Americans before they will take action."

Partial birth abortion will be the catalyst for that change. It is now time to get this accomplished. America is at a crossroads. It is up to us to make sure it goes down the right path.

How do we do this? We need to start with education. Show people exactly what happens in a partial birth abortion. Don't leave out any details. Show America the truth. Explain it to your family, friends and everyone you know. Even after all the talk of partial birth abortion over the last several years there are still people who have no idea what it is. Expose this grisly procedure to them. Let them see how far down the wrong path America has gone.

Next we must elect a pro-life President in the United States. The next President will appoint as many as 5 Supreme Court Justices in the next 8 years. We need to educate the voting population on the candidates' abortion positions. Then vote pro-life this November. Vice-President Al Gore is pro-abortion. He has a pro-abortion voting record and is endorsed by all major pro-abortion organizations. Texas Governor George W. Bush is pro-life. He has signed pro-life legislation and is endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee and by Nebraska Right to Life.

The outcome of the election this fall will decide if the sanctity of human life will be the law of the land or if the culture of death will put a strangle hold on our nation. What lies before us is a crossroad. One road leads to life, the other leads to death, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live" Deuteronomy 30.19. We must end abortion in America before another generation is gone. Otherwise we will never see an end to this holocaust in our life time. Join me in making sure our next President is pro-life. Take a stand for the unborn! Get involved in the political process this fall. The babies are counting on us.

Janet and Harold Kaus and granddaughter Marissa traveled from Morrill to attend the NF!LC Convention in Washington, D. C. They met Congressman Henry Hyde (R-lLL) at the Congressional Reception.

In closing I would like to quote a chant from the crowd at the opening general session of the National Right to Life Committee Convention 2000. The convention started the day after the Supreme Court decision came down. "Roe must go!" Referring to the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973. If we all work hard and elect pro-life officials this fall, "Roe will go!"
